The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression

Throughout this course, I have been sharing many personal incidents experiencing bias, prejudice, and oppression. This time I asked my 17-year-old son if he experienced any bias from others or of which he witnessed. He said that he still remembers his first-grade teacher when she used to not deal fairness with him when it comes to giving opportunities and choosing leaders in the classroom. Even though my son was successful and had the principle’s honor roll award. Also, he mentions other teachers that did not give him attention and were trying to ignore him when he asked to participate in some activities that he was interested in throughout the school year just only because of his skin color and race. According to Derman-Spark & Edwards, 2010. Pg.30. “What children called “fairness” and “unfairness,” we adults know as issues of justice and injustice.” This kind of experiences that children face in the classroom only because of their color, race, and disability of learning are holding them back to be able to face many challenges throughout the school day. Also, these children will grow with fears and anxieties which can really affect their ability of learning which will create inside them to be biased toward others as well by seeking for others race, color, and ethnicities. I believe as a professional in the early childhood field you need to focus more on our actions and behaviors when we deal with families and their children to have a healthy learning environment and better communities.

In fact, a child with no access to healthy water will no doubt become sick. Global Fund for Children “ We support education from children’s earliest years to secondary school and on through university or vocational training.”    ( The Global Fund for children) The website has the same agendas in the field of education for the youth. Through working together to help end the lack of education, the fund focuses on beating poverty and similar issues through education. It sees education as a means of success, as we do here as well within the course. In order to be successful and be better off than their families, the children are provided with tools for education.
