The Personal Side of Bias, Prejudice, and Oppression Throughout this course, I have been sharing many personal incidents experiencing bias, prejudice, and oppression. This time I asked my 17-year-old son if he experienced any bias from others or of which he witnessed. He said that he still remembers his first-grade teacher when she used to not deal fairness with him when it comes to giving opportunities and choosing leaders in the classroom. Even though my son was successful and had the principle’s honor roll award. Also, he mentions other teachers that did not give him attention and were trying to ignore him when he asked to participate in some activities that he was interested in throughout the school year just only because of his skin color and race. Practice Awareness of Microaggression At my workplace, I experienced micro-aggression with my coworkers while they dealt with each other. One time my teacher’s assistance pointed to another coworker and said “black people are always living in the past”, and I proceeded to ask her “why are you saying that?”. She replied with “I heard that many times from many people and they also can never get over slavery.” I was surprised how she pointed to others so badly while she did not even hear these points herself coming from an African Amerian. Also, at my workplace, there is a new employee who is a Muslim woman as well. My coworkers have a micro-aggression toward her. One time one of my coworkers asked her about her hijab on her head. Perspectives on Diversity and Culture To have a conversation with others about their understanding and definition of culture and diversity requires interest from both sides. My family culture To be in this situation is very difficult. My family In Yemen faced a similar situation in 2015 when they had to cross the red sea in Asia to Africa on the animals’ ship to a country called Djibouti because of the civil war. The bombing was following them even they are on the ship. Many ships got drowned in the sea, but my family made it safely thanks to God.  They just had to leave without taking anything; only a small handbag for their personal belongings. Taking three items that represent my family culture will be my holy book (the Quran), my hijab (scarf), and my Islamic, traditional clothes. Yemeni traditional clothes. How Children’s Well-being Hindered by Poverty?   Together we can make a difference in a child’s life   Is children’s well-being negatively affected by poverty during the ages of 3-5, with an emphasis on cognitive development with regard to the preschool skills checklist?   Children are effective by poverty in many developmental areas that will be affected by their well-being as well. Children at an early age need to develop and grow healthy in the four developmental domains such as cognitive, social, emotional, and physical. Children who live in low-income families are struggling in their health which will affect their ability of learning and it will hinder from their education. Poverty hindered children from well-being by the lack of access to education and poor health; these cause challenges to children to maintain a healthy start to life and education.
